what is a health and well-being coach?

As a certified health & well-being coach, I am a behavior modification specialist who helps clients make lasting, positive behavior change that improves their health, vitality, joy and well-being. I use an evidence-based, client-centered change process model and tools developed by Duke Health & Well-Being designed to support you in making long-lasting, sustainable behavior change.

My role is to partner closely with you to co-create a highly personalized, success-oriented, realistic plan for living in alignment with your values and creating the healthy future YOU want for yourself, and then support and encourage you as you work toward your goals.

Through a structured partnership, we will work together to:

  • Realize your optimal health vision, whatever that might be for you, and connect it with your personal values

  • Holistically assess where you are now and where you'd like to be with your health

  • Identify your focus areas

  • Set measurable, actionable goals

  • Identify and overcome barriers, obstacles to change and limiting beliefs

  • Build and maintain motivation, momentum and confidence

  • Cultivate deeper self-awareness, discovery and trust

  • Uncover fresh insights on what works for you and what causes stagnation

  • Celebrate progress, build on successes and learn from failures

my approach

  • Client-centered

Motivation for change is stronger when grounded in your own worldview, values and the context of your own complex life. Our work together is entirely driven by your unique health goals and your ultimate vision for your healthiest, happiest self, which helps us uncover impactful solutions and routines that work for you.

  • Integrative

Your health is so much more than just physical well-being. It's about you as a whole person - your values, goals, work, balance, emotional wellness, fulfillment and life purpose. My approach acknowledges and addresses the interdependent roles of the mind, body and spirit in your overall health and well-being.

  • Science-backed

I utilize a proven change process model developed by Duke Health & Well-Being that's rooted in research and clinical experience in the neuroscience of change and behavior change theories. Plus, it's been proven that using a process for change is more advantageous than random attempts at change.

FAQs

  • Health & well-being coaches serve as guides through the complex behavior change process rather than experts who make recommendations on specifically what, when and how changes should happen. Unlike a healthcare professional, I am not an expert in a health-related field but rather, I am an expert in facilitating lasting, sustainable behavior change through a proven change process model that puts YOU at the center.

For example, while a doctor may diagnose you with pre-diabetes and recommend you lose 20 pounds in 3 months through a combination of nutritional and lifestyle changes, I will not make recommendations, suggestions, prescribe medication or give advice on what I think you should do. Instead, by utilizing motivational strategies and communications techniques informed by behavior change theory and providing resources, I will empower you to take a proactive role in your own health, choose your own health priorities based on what’s important to you and uncover and cultivate intrinsic motivation to work toward your goals. When people connect to their own reasons to change, on their own terms, they're more likely to succeed when compared with someone telling them what to do.

  • No! You can work with a health and well-being coach whether or not you have a chronic condition. The World Health Organization defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease of infirmity." Studies have shown that health & well-being coaching leads to improved health outcomes for those with common chronic health conditions and can also greatly benefit anyone who has been partially successful or unsuccessful in making lasting changes to any area of their health, including:

    • Mind-body connection

    • Community and relationships

    • Physical environment

    • Nutrition and lifestyle

    • Sleep and rest

    • Physical activity and fitness

    • Mental and emotional well-being

    • Fulfillment and purpose

    • Spirituality

For example, health and well-being coaching might be for you if you've made and broken the same New Years resolution for years, are feeling stuck in a rut with your wellness routines, are navigating a life transition (no matter how big or small), are battling with limiting beliefs and negative self talk, are stuck in a cycle of yo-yo dieting, are seeking a better balance between your priorities, are feeling unfulfilled and uninspired, or know where you want to be with your health but not know to get there.

  • Generally, progress toward change can be seen after 3 months. This is why I recommend my 1:1 coaching package
